So my friends and I have been justifiably proud the past several years to have attended the University of Pennsylvania together with John Stephens, who now goes by the moniker John Legend. We even knew him in various tangential ways. Now that he's made it big, winning Grammys and recording under the wing of no less than Kanye West, Penn will no doubt list him as one of its favorite sons (despite the probable general misconception that John Legend attended Penn State).
It turns out, however, that John Legend may need to share that space with one of his classmates. Those of us at Penn during the heady late 90s a cappella craze (which may still be going on) will remember seeing John Stephens as frontman to supergroup Counterparts. We will also remember the frontman to rival supergroup Off the Beat, Sid Khosla. John obviously went on to fame and fortune, but it looks like Sid might follow on a similar path.
Sid is the frontman to a group called Goldspot. Apparently the Brits LOVE them -- the Sunday Times named their debut album the fourth best album of 2007. Yes, the fourth best of all albums that came out last year. So it might not be long before we start hearing Goldspot on the radio in the States.
So, if you want to become a recording star, apparently it is a good idea to check out the Ivy League for college!
